What Are Base Units, Freestanding Units, and Connecting Units?

icon icon

A base unit is the basic foundation of a display rack. It consists of upright posts, a base panel, and a back panel, forming an L-shaped structure. By extending the base unit and freely combining shelves of different depths, it can be configured into a complete freestanding unit.

By further extending the freestanding unit and connecting multiple freestanding units together, the connecting points can share the same upright post, forming a continuous connecting unit.

How do shopping carts affect store sales? A deep dive into the safety design of shopping carts!

icon icon
In today's fast-paced world, shopping has become an indispensable part of our daily lives. Whether it is a family grocery trip on the weekend or a quick purchase during a busy workday, shopping carts are not only a helpful tool in retail stores but also provide consumers with a more comfortable and convenient shopping experience. When shopping at a supermarket, once we have selected our products, in addition to carrying them by hand, putting them into bags or hand baskets, using a shopping cart is the most convenient way to transport a large number of items to the checkout counter. From a safety perspective, a shopping cart with a sturdy structural design can distribute the weight of the products evenly throughout the cart, allowing consumers to maneuver it easily and move steadily along the various aisles of the store. Combined with a spacious basket, it can accommodate all kinds of purchases, from groceries, hardware, tools, food, and daily necessities to furniture. A shopping cart provides customers with a convenient and enjoyable shopping experience!

Shopping Cart Construction

However, some retail shopping carts or store trolleys have begun to show signs of wear and fatigue, and their functions may have become outdated. These factors can gradually diminish the customer's overall shopping experience! What conditions of a shopping cart may unknowingly affect store sales? Let's take a look at some common issues with shopping carts:

1. The Shopping Cart Has Lost Its Steering Control

The wheels no longer respond properly. You want it to go left, but it seems as if the driver has terrible driving skills—the cart either swerves from side to side or keeps moving in the opposite direction! This may be caused by a malfunctioning wheel, bearings that are stuck and make the cart difficult to push, or wheels tangled with foreign objects such as garbage, plastic bags, hair, or yarn. It may also be caused by aging or damage to the wheel axle structure. All of these factors can make the shopping cart difficult and uncomfortable to maneuver.

2. It Feels Like a Roller Coaster on the Moving Walkway!

Shopping carts in large American-style supermarkets are generally equipped with an automatic braking function. When the cart enters a moving walkway, the brake wheels engage with the grooves on the walkway surface, locking the internal mechanism and main wheels in place. However, during holiday shopping seasons, news reports occasionally cover incidents in which shopping carts suddenly accelerate and injure consumers. Therefore, regular maintenance of shopping cart wheels is important. Check whether the wheels are deformed or whether foreign objects are caught in the operating mechanism. Applying grease regularly can also help maintain proper lubrication. These are important maintenance practices for extending the service life of shopping carts and other store equipment.

3. Child Seat Malfunction

Common problems include broken safety guards or cracked plastic seat components. In addition to the risk of pinching or cutting the skin, these problems may also cause a child to fall from the shopping cart. Child seats are generally subject to regulations concerning personal safety. For example, child seats may only be suitable for children over 6 months old and weighing no more than 15 kg. Not only are child seats subject to weight limits, but shopping carts of different sizes—including small, medium, large, and extra-large models—also have load limits based on their respective capacities.

4. Loose Folding Gate (Movable Gate)

How can products fall out of a shopping cart when they have already been placed inside the basket? This is a small but potentially significant problem that may occur due to insufficient store equipment maintenance. When you first start pushing the shopping cart, you may not notice that the latch on the folding gate (the structure that locks onto the wire basket) has become loose. Although there may be no obvious shaking on the surface, after moving around the store for a while, the weight of the basket and its contents, combined with fatigue or aging of the wheels, may cause subtle vertical vibrations. This can cause an already-loose latch to lose its fastening function, allowing products inside the basket to slide through the folding gate and scatter onto the floor. If the products include glass bottles or fresh food, this can not only cause losses for the store but also ruin the customer's pleasant shopping experience.

5. Anti-Collision and Safety Design of Shopping Carts

Why is an anti-collision design necessary? When products are placed inside a shopping cart, the additional weight increases its momentum. If oversized products are placed in the cart, the cart may also become top-heavy, making it more difficult to control its direction while moving. Regulations require that the front corners on both sides of the shopping cart chassis have a rounded design with a radius of at least 5 mm to help prevent the cart from hitting someone's heels or causing injury. In addition, the overall design should not have protruding parts extending beyond the body of the shopping cart, mainly to prevent tripping or collisions caused by carts following one another or accidental front-to-back impacts. Therefore, the overall protective measures can generally be divided into the following areas for reference:
(1) Install protective strips around the upper edges of the wire basket.
(2) Install bumper guards on both front sides of the wire basket, which is the most common method.
(3) After the wire material has been formed, there should be no sharp protrusions or burrs.
(4) Use secure fastening designs (buckle clips) when assembling the wire basket with the base or handle, whether by latching or screw fastening.
(5) Provide safety warnings and usage instructions on the shopping cart.

The above provides a general overview of shopping cart safety and protective measures.

A safe shopping environment can provide consumers with a comfortable and reassuring experience, encouraging repeat purchases. Although a shopping cart is simply a temporary storage and transportation tool designed to make shopping more convenient, accidents involving carts tipping over and products falling can still occur due to manufacturing quality or wear and tear from use. In 2016, Taiwan's Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection referenced the European BS EN 1929 Basket Trolleys series of standards and established five national standards, including CNS 15855 "Shopping Carts." The main requirements are summarized below for reference:

1. General Safety Requirements:
Shopping carts should pass strength tests, stability tests, and tests for the starting force required to move the cart. Any exposed or accessible edges, points, or burrs on the shopping cart must not be sharp enough to cause cuts or abrasions.

2. Anti-Collision Safety Requirements:
The front end of the shopping cart chassis should have a rounded radius of at least 5 mm to help prevent injuries caused by the cart.

3. Child Safety Requirements:
Shopping carts equipped with child seats are only suitable for children over 6 months old and weighing no more than 15 kg.

4. Safety Requirements for Shopping Carts Used on Moving Walkways:
Shopping carts should comply with requirements for lateral and longitudinal stability tests, tests for remaining stable on moving walkways, and tipping tests when leaving moving walkways.

5. Shopping cart manufacturers should provide retailers with clear information regarding the safe and correct use, maintenance, and regular inspection of shopping carts. Retail stores should also provide warning signs to remind consumers to pay attention to safety when using shopping carts.

Actual implementation should still comply with the applicable requirements of CNS 15855-1:2021!

Five key techniques to enhance store display design and create eye-catching presentations to boost sales!

Five Key Tips for Enhancing Store Display Effectiveness

Store display design plays a crucial role in retail presentation. A well-designed product display not only enhances the customer's shopping experience but can also increase store sales.
Here are five key tips for improving store display design:

1. Create a Visual Focal Point: Attract Customers' Attention A “visual focal point” is an important technique for enhancing the effectiveness of store displays. By using elements such as color,
lighting, and display height, you can effectively capture customers' attention.
For example, fashion stores such as Zara use themed window displays and vibrant backgrounds at the entrance to attract customers into the store.

2. Create a Comfortable Shopping Flow: Another key to effective retail display design is creating a smooth customer flow.
Customers should be able to easily find products in the store without feeling lost or confused.
In stores such as IKEA, spacious aisles and clear signage are effective ways to create a smooth shopping flow.

3. Product Categorization and Display: Increase Product Visibility Organizing products according to their categories or functions
can help customers quickly find the products they need.
For example, cosmetics retailer Sephora divides different types of cosmetics into designated display areas and provides testing areas where customers can try the products themselves.

4. Create an Experiential Display: Increase Customer Engagement An experience area is an effective way to increase customer engagement and help customers discover new products.
At Apple Stores, hands-on product displays allow customers to experience the products themselves, which can effectively increase their purchase intention.

5. Update Displays Regularly: Keep the Store Fresh Another key strategy for store display design is to update displays regularly to maintain a fresh look and attract customers.
For example, during Valentine's Day, flower shops may refresh their displays with romantic rose-themed designs to attract customers.

By incorporating JZ Shop Equipment's professional products and expertise in store display solutions, you can also create a unique and highly effective retail space.

Common unit size conversions in daily life

icon icon

In our daily lives, "size" plays an extremely important role. This involves unit conversion, which is not only used to measure the size of objects, the length of distances, or the weight of quantities, but also represents knowledge of dimensions and units that we gradually learn from childhood. These concepts influence how we perceive and understand things. Idioms and sayings related to weights and measures, such as "half a catty and eight taels," "a three-inch tongue," "give an inch and take a mile," and "not bowing for five dou of rice," are often used in everyday speech and also reflect local cultures and lifestyles! However, in medieval Europe and even earlier periods, the measurement of dimensions was based on some fascinating historical practices. For example, one foot was originally said to be based on the width of four palms. Doesn't that make you wonder? After all, everyone's hands and feet are different in size. An inch was later defined based on the length of a barleycorn, while a yard in ancient times was measured according to the distance from the tip of a king's nose to the end of his middle finger when his arm was fully extended. There is a good reason why standardized weights and measures were eventually established.

Speaking of length measurement, do you know the three major measurement systems?
They are the Metric System, Taiwanese System, and Imperial System.
Three Major Measurement Systems
I. Metric System
The metric system includes meters, centimeters, and millimeters.
The metric system emerged in Europe after the Industrial Revolution and adopted a decimal system, making calculations easier and reducing errors. It has also become the internationally used system of measurement.
In Taiwan, the metric system is the most commonly used measurement system. For example, when we plan the shelving layout for an entire retail store, the dimensions provided by the designer or measured on-site by our JZ Shop team are generally expressed in centimeters (cm). However, for smaller items such as checkout counters, island shelving, display boards, or display tables, the number of shelving units is calculated based on the display area and the store's merchandising requirements. In such cases, shelving dimensions are usually calculated in millimeters (mm). These units—meters (m), centimeters (cm), and millimeters (mm)—are all part of the metric system.

Metric Unit Conversion
Applications of the Metric System in Daily Life:
Many everyday products use centimeters as their unit of measurement, such as furniture, appliances, shoes, clothing, cookware, and household items. Height is also commonly measured in centimeters. On maps and when indicating distances and scales, meters are also frequently used as a unit of length.

II. Taiwanese System
The Taiwanese measurement system includes the Taiwanese foot, Taiwanese inch, and Taiwanese fen.

The Taiwanese measurement system is a traditional system of weights and measures used in Taiwan. Passed down from previous generations, one of the most familiar examples is the sizing of quilts and beds, which has traditionally been communicated using Taiwanese feet. For example, if someone says that a quilt is six feet by four feet, would you know how many centimeters that is in length and width? Taiwan commonly uses the following five mattress sizes:
1. 3-foot Standard Single Bed: This is the standard single-bed size and is suitable for children's beds. It measures 3 ft × 6.2 ft (= 91 × 188 cm).
2. 3.5-foot Extra-Wide Single Bed: As the name suggests, this is wider than a 3-foot single bed while maintaining the same length, making it suitable for adults. It measures 3.5 ft × 6.2 ft (= 105 × 188 cm).
3. 5-foot Standard Double Bed: This is the standard double-bed size, measuring 5 ft × 6.2 ft (= 152 × 188 cm).
4. 6-foot Extra-Large Double Bed: Have you heard of a Queen Size bed? It is named after the size traditionally associated with a queen and is designed to provide greater comfort. It measures 6 ft × 6.2 ft (= 182 × 188 cm), providing more space so that one person can turn over without disturbing the other. It is considered more spacious than a standard double bed.
5. 7-foot King-Size Double Bed: Hehe~ If you want to sleep like a king, this is the bed size to choose! It is commonly known as an extra-large double bed and measures 6 ft × 7 ft (= 182 × 212 cm). Some hotel suites are equipped with this extra-large double-bed size.

Bed Size Conversion

In summary, mattresses, pillows, and similar products are relatively bulky. Whether displayed in a bedding store or a department store counter, combining effective warehouse management with space planning based on shelving dimensions can help ensure smooth product flow and contribute to a successful business.

III. Imperial System
Yards, feet, and inches are common units in the Imperial System.
(1) Yard
The symbol for yard comes from the English word "yard" and is abbreviated as "yd." In curtain specialty stores and home furnishing stores, products such as curtains, tablecloths, and door curtains are often measured using "yd" as the unit of conversion. One theory states that in medieval England, a yard represented the length of a man's belt. However, because people's body sizes differed, this created inconsistencies. In the 12th century, King Henry I of England is said to have defined a yard as the distance from the tip of his nose to the end of his thumb when his arm was fully extended. In addition to these interesting stories from overseas, traditional Taiwanese fabric stores used the Taiwanese foot as their standard unit of measurement, eventually resulting in three Taiwanese feet being equivalent to one yard. This also corresponds to the total length of the bamboo measuring rulers traditionally used by craftsmen. Internationally, the yard is commonly used as a measurement unit in the Americas, while the meter is more commonly used in Europe.

(2) Feet and Inches
The English word for foot is "feet," abbreviated as "ft," with the symbol "′." The abbreviation for inch is "in," with the symbol "″," derived from the English word "inch." These Imperial units do not use a decimal system. In the past, when doing business with customers in Hong Kong and export customers who used Imperial measurements, dimensions were often specified in inches. Over time, we became so familiar with the conversion that we could immediately recognize that 1″ = 2.54 cm without having to memorize it. In Hong Kong, feet and inches are also commonly referred to as "呎" and "吋" respectively, distinguishing them from metric units. When receiving inquiries about store shelving from overseas markets, the shelving design drawings provided by customers from countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States may also be marked using Imperial measurements.
Inches are commonly used in everyday life for clothing sizes, tire sizes, hardware screw dimensions, pipe diameters and lengths, paper sizes, electronic display screen sizes, and more.

How to Choose the Right Display Shelving for Your Store

icon icon

Opening a store is a dream for many people!

What kind of store should you open? What type of business is profitable? Where should you open your store? What kind of store design can attract customers? How should you design the interior of your store? How should you create the right store style? How should the products you sell be displayed on shelving? And how should you choose a suitable shelving and display system?

We understand that these questions can be time-consuming and challenging for business owners who are preparing to open a new store or expand their existing business. As a professional manufacturer and designer of retail store equipment and shelving, JZ Shop Equipment would like to share some insights on choosing display shelving for product presentation.

When planning your store, you can first consider the following points:
1. What category does your business belong to among food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and entertainment?
2. What is your target customer profile?
3. How much space is available for product display?
4. What types of products do you sell?

1. What category does your business belong to among food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and entertainment?

People's lives revolve around food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and entertainment, and the type of business you operate is closely related to how your store should be designed. For example, if you sell food products, your store may have a format similar to retailers such as Leezen or Homemakers Union. The products can generally be divided into two major categories: dry goods and fresh or refrigerated goods.
Dry goods generally refer to products that can be stored at room temperature, such as snacks, noodles, canned foods, powdered ingredients, and other healthy food products. These products are usually displayed on supermarket shelving according to product categories, similarities between products, and packaging sizes.
Fresh or refrigerated goods generally refer to products that need to be stored or displayed under refrigerated or frozen conditions, such as frozen edamame, tofu, soup dumplings, and hot pot ingredients. These products are usually arranged or stacked directly inside refrigerators. Some products, such as organic fruits and vegetables, do not require refrigeration. Display fixtures such as woven baskets or wooden crates can be used to create a natural, rustic, and fresh atmosphere that conveys a healthy lifestyle.

If you sell sports shoes, apparel, and accessories, the style, design, and colors of your shelving should complement the overall style of your store. This type of business often includes brands such as Nike specialty stores or large retail brands such as DECATHLON. Even if you operate an independent sporting goods store, you will likely have your own brand name and Corporate Identity System (CIS). Therefore, the style, materials, textures, and colors of the display shelving should be coordinated with your CIS and can be customized in both design and manufacturing.

2. What is your target customer profile?

Why is it important to understand who your target customers are when opening a store? Different products are intended for different types of customers. One of the most common examples is luxury boutiques selling internationally recognized brands such as CHANEL or Louis Vuitton. In this type of fashion and accessories store, even a basic women's handbag can cost tens of thousands of New Taiwan dollars. If the store interior is too plain, or if the products displayed on the shelving lack focus or are arranged in a cluttered manner, customers may simply browse briefly and then leave. After all, luxury products are not sold simply to customers who can afford them. In addition to the value and benefits brought by the brand itself, a high-end boutique relies on the overall design of its store layout and display furniture to create a fashionable and sophisticated atmosphere. This can stimulate customers' desire to purchase and encourage purchasing behavior, ultimately generating revenue for the brand.

Opening a store is not simply about making money. It is about satisfying customer needs, generating value for the business, and continuously improving its operations.

3. How much space is available for product display?

There are several types of retail stores, including independent stores, specialty stores, chain stores, and large-format retail stores. When considering the size of the store, the most important factor is product density. For example, if a store carries 100 different products and has several dozen ping of floor space, you need to consider how to use display shelving to present the wide range of products effectively to customers. If the store has less than 10 ping of space, you need to carefully select the products and determine how to make the best use of the available space through an efficient display arrangement. In addition, product placement and shelving configurations are closely related to customer traffic flow. An overly crowded store may make customers feel uncomfortable, causing them to take only a quick look before unconsciously heading toward the exit. Therefore, when planning store space, the types and quantities of products being sold should be considered first.

4. What types of products do you sell?

Take a pet store as an example. From food and beverages to daily necessities, sleeping products, and entertainment items, a pet store may carry hundreds of different types of products.
For food products, categories may include pet food, canned food, snacks, and nutritional supplements. Related products may also include feeding accessories such as plates, bowls, water dispensers, feeders, circulating water fountains (pet appliances), and bibs. Some relatively lightweight products, such as pet food, are available in different package sizes, including 1.5 kg, 3 kg, 7.5 kg, and 15 kg. Taking JZ Shop's general-purpose QS shelving series as an example, each shelf can support approximately 80 kg. Therefore, the most suitable package sizes for shelving would generally be 1.5 kg to 7.5 kg, while larger 15 kg bags of pet food would be better displayed on floor-standing display platforms or pallets.
For products such as pet leashes and toys, display fixtures such as pegboards, wire panels, or slatwall systems can be used so that customers can easily identify different product categories at a glance. These fixtures can be combined with various hanging accessories, such as hooks with different designs, as well as square and round tubes, allowing products to be displayed in an organized and visually appealing manner.

Conclusion

A comfortable shopping environment depends not only on product variety, quality, and service, but also on the overall coordination of the store space and display furniture. Creating a store environment where customers feel comfortable and want to stay longer gives you more opportunities to turn a pleasant shopping experience into actual purchases!

What is the difference between a Starter Unit and an Add-On Unit? How do I choose?

icon icon

Starter Unit
A Starter Unit comes with two full upright posts, allowing it to be assembled and used independently. Choose a Starter Unit if you only need a single shelving unit or if each shelving unit will be installed separately without connecting to others.

Add-On Unit
An Add-On Unit comes with one upright post only and must share an upright post with a Starter Unit or a previous Add-On Unit for assembly. It cannot be used on its own and is ideal for extending multiple shelving units in a continuous row.
