1. The Shopping Cart Has Lost Its Steering Control

The wheels no longer respond properly. You want it to go left, but it seems as if the driver has terrible driving skills—the cart either swerves from side to side or keeps moving in the opposite direction! This may be caused by a malfunctioning wheel, bearings that are stuck and make the cart difficult to push, or wheels tangled with foreign objects such as garbage, plastic bags, hair, or yarn. 4. Loose Folding Gate (Movable Gate)

How can products fall out of a shopping cart when they have already been placed inside the basket? When you first start pushing the shopping cart, you may not notice that the latch on the folding gate (the structure that locks onto the wire basket) has become loose. Although there may be no obvious shaking on the surface, after moving around the store for a while, the weight of the basket and its contents, combined with fatigue or aging of the wheels, may cause subtle vertical vibrations. This can cause an already-loose latch to lose its fastening function, allowing products inside the basket to slide through the folding gate and scatter onto the floor. If the products include glass bottles or fresh food, this can not only cause losses for the store but also ruin the customer's pleasant shopping experience.


5. Anti-Collision and Safety Design of Shopping Carts

Why is an anti-collision design necessary? When products are placed inside a shopping cart, the additional weight increases its momentum. If oversized products are placed in the cart, the cart may also become top-heavy, making it more difficult to control its direction while moving. Regulations require that the front corners on both sides of the shopping cart chassis have a rounded design with a radius of at least 5 mm to help prevent the cart from hitting someone's heels or causing injury. In addition, the overall design should not have protruding parts extending beyond the body of the shopping cart, mainly to prevent tripping or collisions caused by carts following one another or accidental front-to-back impacts. Therefore, the overall protective measures can generally be divided into the following areas for reference:
(1) Install protective strips around the upper edges of the wire basket.
(2) Install bumper guards on both front sides of the wire basket, which is the most common method.
(3) After the wire material has been formed, there should be no sharp protrusions or burrs.
(4) Use secure fastening designs (buckle clips) when assembling the wire basket with the base or handle, whether by latching or screw fastening.
(5) Provide safety warnings and usage instructions on the shopping cart.

A safe shopping environment can provide consumers with a comfortable and reassuring experience, encouraging repeat purchases. Although a shopping cart is simply a temporary storage and transportation tool designed to make shopping more convenient, accidents involving carts tipping over and products falling can still occur due to manufacturing quality or wear and tear from use. In 2016, Taiwan's Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection referenced the European BS EN 1929 Basket Trolleys series of standards and established five national standards, including CNS 15855 "Shopping Carts." The main requirements are summarized below for reference:

1. General Safety Requirements:
Shopping carts should pass strength tests, stability tests, and tests for the starting force required to move the cart. Any exposed or accessible edges, points, or burrs on the shopping cart must not be sharp enough to cause cuts or abrasions.

2. Anti-Collision Safety Requirements:
The front end of the shopping cart chassis should have a rounded radius of at least 5 mm to help prevent injuries caused by the cart.

3. Child Safety Requirements:
Shopping carts equipped with child seats are only suitable for children over 6 months old and weighing no more than 15 kg.

4. Safety Requirements for Shopping Carts Used on Moving Walkways:
Shopping carts should comply with requirements for lateral and longitudinal stability tests, tests for remaining stable on moving walkways, and tipping tests when leaving moving walkways.

5. Shopping cart manufacturers should provide retailers with clear information regarding the safe and correct use, maintenance, and regular inspection of shopping carts. Retail stores should also provide warning signs to remind consumers to pay attention to safety when using shopping carts.

Actual implementation should still comply with the applicable requirements of CNS 15855-1:2021!
